Tonight was the revising equivalent of.. something really unpleasant. (I'm fucking all out of descriptions...) . It took me about four hours to recast seven pages. Which might mean I have lost my mind. I knew it was going to be a slog going in. Setting the scene is not a skill I possess in anything but middling quantities. Not at all.
Trying to paint an environment is next to impossible for me, especially when I'm trying to write about a real place that I've never been. I used Google maps, real estate websites, sunset times for 2012, weather reports and flickr to get visual input, but even then it was like pulling teeth with every paragraph, trying to put down the bones.
But I told myself that I wasn't going to stop tonight until I was done. So I'm done, and I can stop. I have a rough picture painted, but at least it's on the page. Now I can go in later and clean it up. I also learned that Google maps do not like to go down private streets... *sigh*.
But it's done, Chapter 3 is rewritten and better for it. Tomorrow I can start the revising of Chapter 4! Hopefully, an easier go. I had a tiny bit more of a clue when throwing down those words. But then I have to dig into sorting out Sherlock's characterization problems... again, a challenge... I feel there will be a lot of wholesale lopping of things...
But I feel like I got over the scene setting hump so onward and moving towards upwards. 37/100! (again, no more words I have to explain overwhelmed feelings... but calm ones too.)
