For some masochistic reason, I'm going to attempt GYWO again. Perhaps I just enjoy failing! The smallest challenge category they have 150K words over 365 days. Mind you I crashed and burned through 2013 with about 28% completion, but that was due to injury. So, as I am feeling better(ish) I am going to try again. It's 411 words a day for a year. My immediate reaction is "seriously, but I've failed at three Nanos and one GWYO? Seriously?"

My current daily count is something like 200 on a good day, but I'm working at increasing it, it's like an atrophied muscle, right?

It's not like I don't have the content. I went through my list of remaining sub!John stories that I've had on the docket since forever and there's about six or seven more and a ridiculous idea of a long form one, so that could be 150K if I went for a year of fanfic, which wouldn't be bad. I should set a goal of done by season 4. Ha, that's doable, no?

If anyone up for the challenge, you have until Dec 31st to sign up. They range from 150K to 500K. I'm going to call it Mugen, Get Your Shit Together 2014... That's my subtitle...

Hey, I consider a third of 150k pretty darn good, myself! But yeah, failing is never fun. I do think writing is a muscle to exercise. I wrote a blog daily in college for six weeks. It was hard at first, but at the end I was writing them in my head, constantly on the lookout for cool stuff...

Even if you fail at this, you got more words out than you had before. So, unless failure is something you take really hard, it's probably worth it?

I'm somewhat tempted to try it. Not sure what I'd write...I suppose it would be an exercise in "quantity produces quality"? That's really what I want, at this point: to progress in my abilities. So, 400 words of fiction a day? Potentially possible...

Yeah I agree, if anything it will help to motivate me to write, and that is always a good thing! You should try it! They give you a neat spreadsheet that tallies up your progress, tells you how much you've written on multiple stories... seriously I did it mainly for the tracking spreadsheet :-)

Are you not writing fanfic anymore? Your last story was round about the same time as mine in the Spring. Ah, I love your Gameplay series :-D

But yes, 411 words of anything would definitely be exercise for the mind and fingers!

I am still writing, sort of. I just haven't finished anything! It's all starts and stops and more beta-ing than anything... -sigh- Heck, even the crafting went downhill until October, and then that restarted with a vengeance. Good lord, I don't think my startitis has waned since then, really.

But yes, there's been some work here and there on Sherlock fics, and most recently a Welcome to Night Vale tentacle story, which is...probably halfway done at this point? :) Those boys are so cute!

And thank you very much! I really liked the Gameplay series too. It was a ton of work, but definitely something I'm proud of. I want to do more like that...but the work intimidates me, now that I know what needs to happen, alas.

That's one of the reasons an everyday commitment would be helpful...a reason to get over that niggling worry and just write, and then I'll probably naturally want to find betas and finish things?

But then there's that failure thing. I'm not sure how hard I'd take it. Probably depends on how it's presented? Shall I tell myself "you have to" versus "let us try this fun/challenging thing for x amount of time"... A month is rather appealing (I think everyone NaNo-ing rubbed off on me!)

What will you be using GYWO for? Fanfic only? Original stuff too?

Not sure what I'll write. I'm really excited by the thought of making a dent in my fan fic stories... They're the only solid idea that I have now, so I figure I'll start with that.

The thing about GYWO is that they have end of monthly check-ins so you do have to fess up to your count. But the sting of not making the goal wore off after awhile... I'm trying again and just using it as a motivator. We have an entire year, things can ebb and flow...

Very cool about your Night Vale tentacle fic, yeah I can see that very easily! I swear our minds are on the same wavelength sometime. My current sub!john fic is tentacle, and yes it does work in this verse... :-) You'll see! :-D

I think the "let us try this fun/challenging thing for x amount of time" is the best way to go, there's no point in beating yourself up for a year...

Well, I warmly encourage all the fanfic!

Hrm, I'm really not sure about the entire year bit, but...it's sort of a "why not?" at this point. It might not work. I beta so much it takes away from writing energy, and would editing count? Gotta wonder about those kind of things. But yeah, I'll give it a whirl for a month, and if that goes well, maybe another...
