Top Gear:
Day 7
Today I spent the day packing... Nerf heat. My entire team was locked and loaded and we even brought our guns to our morning status meeting, which got a bit crazy as people kept shooting the guy who was trying to take notes at the whiteboard. Yeah, not good... I did teach one of my devs the concept of Vatican Cameos... Still trying to instill that in him... I text it to him occasionally, then shoot him in the head... It's slowly starting to work... Our dev manager is a huge Sherlock fan as well, so once next Sunday rolls around he should be soundly versed in the Vatican Cameo as well. This will be a plus when the next hail of Nerf fire explodes in the office.
Writing wise today was a bit better. The story is at a place where it's starting to flow. I think I'm just really interested in the dynamic right now of the situation. I had a helpful epiphany from NPR this morning as I slowly became conscious. There was a piece on the computer analysis of language and they talked about the use of pronouns when communicating with people who you felt were above you or below you on a power level. I immediately thought, holy crap I can apply this to my story as well it's kind of about that dance of power between three people. So I went in and changed a lot of the pronoun usage in this. It's interesting, the piece talked about how this is totally a subconscious act, so I doubt anyone will even notice it, but perhaps on a subconscious level it will read... Ah it's just me noodling on a nerdy detail but I'll do anything to try to add more layers to something if possible.
I've been trying to keep track of all the shit I'm looking up for this one. Today I looked at Mr Tux, Michael Andrews Bespoke, Modern hotel design, platform beds and modern luxury bedroom design, and Roppongi Hills. Stereolab sets the mood for this one... Tomorrow will be a lot of shoulder anatomy and underlying muscles and nerves as well as bullet caliber for ... we gave the Afghanistan folks weapons I think to fight the Russians back in the day, so I guess American Army rifle bullet calibers... Thank the lords for Google... hrm, and I need to figure out strange physical measurements for someone who is John Watson sized...
But anywho. I still am a bit like WTF about this whole piece and the character arc I'm trying to take John on in this one is soundly not being applied so I really need to dig in at some point and move him around the board to get him to where he needs to be and where Sherlock needs to be by the end of this jumbled mess.
I think my new challenge for this piece is to first finish it, and second make it presentable and not suck. I have to beat this one soundly no matter how it turns out, I have to make it right and make it work. I'm interested to see what level of work this story will need for me to not be mortified by it... cause right now... MORTIFIED... Ah well, it seems I'm up for this challenge... So no Dizzy short story today, Sub!John won out in the muse category.

Your office life sounds charming my dear! I'm a little jealous of your mad researching skills. Lord knows mine needs work, my inability to clarify certain medical points go a long way toward explaining my reluctance to word on certain stories. Ahem.
You sound like you made a long way on the story, actually. Some frustrations are to be expected for sure. I'm curious what is that pronoun tidbit you learnt? Share with the class! :)

Date: 2012-05-01 04:59 pm (UTC)Ah most of the research I do is for a small detail here or there. Well depends. For this one, I am mainly looking for pictures of places so I have a reference. I need to make a better list... so many random things...
How goes your story? What are you working on next?
