Got the first rounds of story feedback. General sense is that it does not suck! This is good to know! It seems (not at all surprisingly so) that there are some physical logistics issues (or at least I need to be more clear about how much range John has when bound to a headboard... (totally agree, sometimes I get lazy) and I need to work on Sherlock's emotional clarity and intent as I'm making some larger changes in how they go about things. (again totally agree, I can do better with this).
I always love how you write something and you think like of course this makes perfect sense, my intentions are so clear and then your eagle-eyed beta is like, nope... didn't get that from this... This to me is awesome. It's like being stopped from walking out of your apartment wearing your underwear on the outside of your clothes... I've just been saved yet again from putting something out there that might not convey what I think it conveyed. So YES, more writing on both the physical and emotional fronts but YAY, this will make it better in the end and that's all that is important to me. I just want people not to be confused... So I plan to tackle the physical stuff first and clean those bits up, and then go through again with the emotional clarity stick... this replaces my POV stick...

The goal is to clean this shit up by EOD Sunday and then slide it back under my betas door and hope for the "this now is more better" thumbs up... I think I'm going to retool quite a bit. OMG I have literally 20 minutes of action and this is taking me 45 years! FORTY-FIVE YEARS!!

Date: 2012-10-06 04:46 am (UTC)I can definitely relate to your issue. I've told people and been told many a time that "This is confusing, what is happening here?" And I love seeing the results of such questions. It really makes you re-examine what you're saying. My bigger problem lately has been going off on tangents...distracting from the story. Not sure how/why that is, it seems like my writing issues come and go.
...and I will say nothing about how long it is taking you to write things. If you look back, I am quite sure you will see that the majority of that time is spent waiting, or doing other stuff, or procrastinating (and doing other stuff :)). At least, that's how it goes for me. If I and my betas would just get it done, I'd have finished the series in a month, and published them all in another.

Date: 2012-10-06 05:23 am (UTC)so are you watching Elementary? I watched the second episode and it's funny I basically IGNORE the weekly cases and just enjoy the Sherlock/Joan bits and relationship. The cases are so CBS procedural to me, but I do like this dynamic.
So you have more stuff out in betaland?

Date: 2012-10-06 05:46 am (UTC)Yes, I'm almost done with story number two...Hopefully I'll be getting it back from my second beta this weekend. I'm so busy, though, it's kind of ridiculous. Not only am I doing this, there is beta-ing three stories this week, tagging, writing for the LAS, writing a letter...and I just finished my largest skein of yarn ever. Perhaps I should post about this stuff...
